What is a food handlers card?
A food handlers card (also called a food handler card, food handler certificate, or food worker card) is proof that you have completed an approved food safety training course. Where a state or county requires one, it typically must be obtained within a set window of starting work — often 30 to 60 days.
Not every state requires one. Some states require only a single Certified Food Protection Manager per establishment rather than individual worker cards. Others leave the decision to counties or cities. The guides above cover every state’s actual requirement.
How much does a food handler card cost?

Does a food handler card expire?
Yes. Most cards last two to three years, and the term is set by whoever issued it — so the expiry printed on your own card is the answer that counts. In most states you retake the standard course rather than a shorter renewal-only one: Food handler card renewal.
